At a meeting of the Committee pf the West Coast Rugby Union held at Greymoutli last evening, a letter was received from the Bayswater Union offering £2O guarantee for a match between West Coast and their reps, to be played at Takaka.—The offer was accepted. In the Mart this morning, Messrs W. Jeffries and Co, /offered by auction, the property on Kanieri road of Mr T. Crough senr. Bidding skirted started at- £6OO and went to £BOO when it was passed in. Private negotiations are now proceeding for the purchase. Another successful tournament was held at St. Mary’s Club Rooms last evening. There was a. good gathering to compete for the prizes donated kV Mrs G. Deidrichs. The winning proved to be Miss N. O’Connor, and the second Mrs Cleary. ' The first gent’s prize was won by Mr R. Robinson and the second by Mr Cleary. After the supper adjournment the hall was cleared and dancing indulged in, Miss E. Keenan supplying the music. Mr Thus Rouse had charge of the floor.
At the Greymouth Competitions yesterday the ladies National Song insulted: Miss C. Hopkins, (“Ye Banks and Braes”), 129' points, Ist: Mrs E, Stoop (“Angus Macdonald”) 127 points 2nd; Miss«M. Bruce, (“We’d Better Bide Awee”) 117 points, 3rd. Miss Beth Robertson, (“Ye Banks and Braes”) also competed. ‘The Judge paid a tribute to a lady competitor fop playing the accompaniment for a riial in the ladies’ singing events, enabling the rival to win first, but he was glad her generosity was not unrewarded as she had won the ladies’ national song. In this the winner, Miss C. Hopkins, displayed a really good voice, but lie would like the beautiful vowel sounds brought more forward and maintained l on the lips. Mrs Stoop had a few slight stumbles and bad not worked up a finale well. Miss Bruce had an ideal voice, but, despite her fine tone ailid feeling, her singing was defective in breathing and volume.
