THE SUGAR STRIKE.
AUCKLAND, September 6
The Auckland sugar workers strike continues, as the men have decided not to go back to work until every man has been reinstated. Tlie Company claims the right to exercise its own discretion as to whom it shall employ again. The Union met to-night and decided to stand firm.
A. CANDIDATE.
WELLINGTON, September 6.
It is announced Air K. S. Williams will be a candidate for the Bay of Plenty seat. Mr Williams, in announcing his decision to contest the seat, expressed regret a£ the occasion which had arisen for an election, and paid a tribute to the late Air AlacDonald’s public services.
A COAIING LOAN. WELLINGTON, September 6.
“I want to assure you that we do not intend to raise a compulsory loan for Public Work's purposes,” said the Prime Minister to an Auckland deputation to-day. “Thera will he n loan for Soldiers’ Land Settlement and for cleaning up in connection with tlie war. Probably a Bill authorising this loan will contain a compulsory clause, but I am of tho opinion there is sufficient patriotic feeling among the people who are possessed of capital in tho country to ensure that the money required will be provided without a. compulsory clause being put into operation. I think you will see later that I am right.”
AN AIRMAN’S VIEW. CHRISTCHURCH, September 6. At a reception ceremony in connection with Captain Dickson’s return flight from the North Captain Dickson said that what appealed' to him in connection with the “stunt” was that a victory had been won by South Island' which could not be taken away. The aeroplane carried two bags of malls for the Postal Department.
