A BIG UPHEAVAL THREATENED,

LONDON, September 2. Efforts to avert the engineering dispute failed. The lock out begins on Saturday. The Miners Conference lasted only a quarter' of an hour. It is unofficially announced there is no hope of mediation r from the Triple Alliance, which decided to stand by the miners. Mr Addison (a Commoner) - says to get in coal. It is going to be ■ a big strike. The next possibility of a move hi the direction of a settlement is the * Trade Union Congress which medts at Portsmouth on Monday. . The public generally believe the strike •will not eventuate, especially as there is three weeks interval for negotiations.

In view of the number of engineers depending on electrical workers, it is estimated a million and a half will be affected if the latter are locked out. It .is estimated the coal strike will throw idle a million and a half workers in other industries in the first week, 2,150 000 in the second week and 2,643,000 in the third week.
