COUNTY MATTERS.

Messrs Bruce,. (County Chairman), Duff (M.C.C,), Millner (overseer), and Evans (clerk), yesterday visited several County works in Stafford and Dillmans Ridings and proceeded to Greymouth subsequently to eonfer with Mr J. D. Gillies, Resident Engineer, in respect to County works generally. En route the Arahurn-Awntuna-Kumara Junction road was inspected at three different points, and after consulting with the Resident Engineer it was decided to expend £SOO at the Arah'ura end in constructing a road on the sea-side of tlie railway as far as funds would permit, and a further £SOO jn forming a road from Acre creek to Kapitea, these two portion to bo linked up eventually. In discussing South Westland .'bridges it was stated that the Little Wanganui bridge was held up for the want of (he necessary hardwood. Orders to lot a contract for Waitangi bridge have been received, but it is not possible yet to arrange for the timber. The site for Waiho bridge has been surveyed, and an appropriation is now awaited. Thjs will be a Suspension b.yidgo swung from two large concrete abutments. A vote of £1,500 has been authorised for small bridges and culverts on all crossings oil the Christchurch road to Otira. The small culverts on the road frum Mikonui tq Ferguson's q|re to be in position before Christmas. The washout on Mt. Hercules is to be attended to within the month, the timber now being available. The (first grant of £650 for Bruce Bay landing road lias been spent, and £250 additional authorised. The landing stage to Flower Pot rock awaits the decision of the Marine .Department, The disposal of several small votes for County roads was approved, and the works will be p'ut in hand as soon as possible. Mr Bruce expressed his satisfaction on the very satisfactory iiar ture of the interview pud thanked MiGillies as departmental officer, for his attention to urgent matters.
