JOCKEY SWINDLE
BERLIN, June 20. f'You have just the figure to make a splendid jockey.” Thus Paul Schlank, a builder’s foreman, of Konigsberg, one of Germany’s notorious swindlers, would address youths in Berlin streets —his intended victims. Layishly dressed in the latest riding fashion, Schlank depicted in dazzling colours the excitement and quick profits of a jockey’s life.
Stating that he was Germany’s leading trainer of jockeys, he gathered numbers of young men and boys together in a house near a. racecourse. He took them to the races, flattered them with racing jargon, expensive dinners, and tours of local stables. Finally, having pocketed heavy fees, Schlank disappeared. taking all the personal belongings of his victims and leaving a mass of debts, He paid no rent for his luxurious villa, ‘‘Jockeys’ .College.” Thirteen of his victims have brought charges against him, and many more are going daily to the authorities. Schlank’s arrest was caused by a. formervictim recognising him in a Berlin street by his dapper riding attire.
