PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN. WASHINGTON, August 29. Reports reaching here indicate that the people are taking little interest in the Presidential campaign save in Ohio. The Republicans regret that Mr Janies M. Cox has placed Mr Harding on the defensive by his campaign fund charges. The Republicans had planned to make an aggressive attack upon President Wilson’s policies and keep Mr Cox busy defending the President. The Republicans claim the country generally wants a change. The Democrats claim tliat the Republicans who favour the League of Nations are turning to Mr Cox.

UNITY IN CHINA. - PEKING, August 29. The Premier, in a speech, pointed out that if the Government decided to call together a People’s Assembly, its purpose would bo limited to electing a now Parliament and .framing a now Constitution.

The Premier asserted that peace with the Southern Cantonese Government was an accomplished fact, and the proclamation of unification was only awaiting the determination of a practical means to give effect to it.

OTTAWA, Aug. 30 Mr A. C. Ross, a prominent Canadian yachtsman, has published an open-letter to Sir Thomas Lipton asking him either to withdraw his declared intention to challenge for the America Cup in 1921 or 1922, or agree to make the next race a triangular contest. Mr Ross also asks for a change of course and in the class of yachts, pointing out public interest in the last races waned owing to the failure of Shamrock and Resolute to answer requirements in a really heavy wind. A COAL ORDER. LONDON, August 30. Consequent on Ramaciotti submitting analysis of Newcastle coal to the Italian Government, lie placed an order for an experimental eight thousand tons for gas making. The price is satisfactory. It is hoped to establish a regular trade. Government also undertook to provide ship transport, but it is now understood the whole transaction is held up through the Australian Industrial troubles.

BRITISH COAL CRISIS. LONDON, August 30. A two-thirds strike majority of the miners is now certain.

The fact that the Yorkshire miners show only a comparatively narrow majority in favour of a strike and those of Nottinghamshire being likewise, greatly strengthens the hands of those workin" against a strike. The Yorkshire vote was 58,530 in favour of a strike, and 55,979 against, showing that it is a large majority of the elder men there are solidly against another strike after their previous disastrous experience in Yorkshire. The Triple Alliance may, it is said, decide to refer the matter to the Parliamentary Committee of the Trade Union Congress, which meets on Tuesday.. It is understood that the Government is now prepared to re-open negotiations for increased production. Meanwhile, however, the price of coal lias been raised by the Government by another 3s to 63s per ton. It is the rise that the miners oppose.

MEXICO’S DESIRE. NEW YORK, August 31. The New York “Times” correspondent in Mexico City interviewed the Provincial President de la Huerta, who said:—“We are interested in curbing infant mortality, and will provide farmers with coast-wise steamships to handle crops. Mexicans want foreigners for their investments and . things the yean teach us. All protection will be viven them, hut they must not ask for "more privileges than the natives have.”
