[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.— -COPYRIGHT.) FIRE DAMAGE, AUCKLAND, August 30. A fire last night at Arch. Clark and Sons, shirt and collar factory at Grey Lynn,was confined to part of tho building which was not badly burned, but the stock valued at £20,000 sustained serious damage by fire and water. The cutting room where the fire started was practically gutted. Insurances were £20,000 in New Zealand ond South British Offices. The factory employed about 400, mostly girls and women. It is understood the fire will not interfere to any great extent with their work. PIANO PLAYING RECORD. W AIM ATE, August 30. Albel-t iSteele, at Arcadia Theatre completed 106 hours >ls minutes continuous piano playing, winding up freshly after midnight on Saturday night.
LONG LIFE ENDS. CHRISTCHURCH, August 30. Obituary—Thomas William Winter, aged 102 years. He arrived in New Zealand in the sixties and was well known in musical circles for many years. His last public appearance was at the 1900 Christchurch Jubilee Exhibition.
CORDIAL MANUFACTURERS. AUCKLAND, August 27,
At the Police Court, Hollis and Walls, cordial manufacturers, admitted the adulteration of raspberry cordial, ■which.’an analysis showed was nothing more than a. mixture of water, sugar, and red ink, or some such aniline colouring. Defendants declared all the ingredients perfectly harmless. Mr J. W. Poynton, S.M. said such adulteration was repreheisivc in the highest degree ,and imposed a fine of £SO and costs.
DIVORCE CASE. AUCKLAND, August 27. At the Supreme Court a decree nisi was granted in the case of Leslie King Beale, of Whangarei, v. Olive Muriel Beale, on the grounds of adultery with Percy Western, of Whangarei. Petitioner claimed £SOO damages. The jury found respondent and correspondent guilty, and assessed the damages at £IOO. It also found petitioner not guilty is misconduct, as alleged by respondent.
SENTENCED TO 5 YEARS. INVERCARGILL, August 27. At the Court Alexander Mitchell, a farm was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for carnal knowledge of a ’girl under sixteen years of -ago.
