PROBLEMS OF BIRTH. BRISBANE, Aug. 26. Before the Medical Congress, Doctor Barrington read a paper dealing with problems of birth. He showed that in hospitals and properly conducted institutions the use of anaesthetics and anticeptics, and non-incddlesoms midwifery resulted in an enormous reduction of morbidity and mortality. On tbe other hand, in outside institutions, mothers and babies suffered almost as much as in the past. He stated it was an established fact that a certain disease caused from 30 to 5) per cent of the childless martinge, and 20 per cent of the blindness in infancy.
AUSTRALIAN ITEMS. SYDNEY, Aug. 27. Both scullers report that they are in the best of condition for to-morrow’s race. There is every indication of fine weather. An extension of the shearers’ strike is foreshadowed. The Australian Workers’ Union states that all non-union wool sheds may he boycotted by other unions. *
Although the coal tribunal Las not reached any finality in the dispute, a conciliatory spirit is now apparent. There appears to be no danger, of an up heaval in the industry.. Mr Ashford, ex-Minister for Lands, has issued a writ claiming £2OOO damages for alleged slander from Mr Clark, member of the Assembly for Wammerawa, in connection with soldier settlement.
Parer and Mclntosh have resumed their flight to Melbourne. Mr Buxton states that if the potato market here is judiciously supplied New Zealand potatoes will be able to realise about £6 10s to £7 a ton f.o.b. in New Zealand. He is going to Queensland to-morrow with a view to negotiations
with the Queensland State Produce Department, and will ascertain the possibility of arranging future contracts direct with that State. MELBOURNE, Aug. 27. The first aerial Derby was raced today from Serpentine to Melbourne, over 116 miles, four planes competing. It was won by Lieut Trelow.
