The deatli of Mr Evan H Lewis took place yesterday in his 82nd year at his residence, Ward Street, Coljden. The deceased, who was a native of Tasmania, lately resided at Barrytown. 'Attracted by the lure of gold, lip came to the West Coast rushes, and landed at Hokitika in its palmy days, Following mining with varying success for years, the late Mr Lewis settled eventually at Barrytown, where lie spent many Tears, and gained the esteem of all who knew him. A very successful function was held iat St. Mary’s Club rooms last evening. The programme took the form of- an eight game euchre tournament in which eighty competitors took part. After a keen competition Miss K. Murphy won the first ladies prize and Mrs J. Fox the second. Mr M. Connolly won the first cent’s and Mr A- Sumner tile second. Rev. Father O’Sullivan then •wecomed the visiting Marist football team who attended in full force. He paid a high, tribute to the position the Marist Club had attained which, must entail some hard practice. The Rev. Father assured them that they were aljl glad to see the team once again on ihp Coast and lie hoped that the gallic they were to pjay against the local reps would be a pleasant one and their stay •amongst us would prove enjoyable. He also had great pleasure in welcoming the members of the local Executive and Referees’ Association, Mr A; Lawn, as Chairman of the Executive ancj West Coast- Rugby representative ' thanked the Club committee for the invitation to he present.
