PONZI’S TRIAL. ' NEW YORK, Aug. 20. Crowds throng the court during Ponzi’s trial. His liabilities are officially stated to be eight hundred thousand sterling. LABOUR’S AIM. LONDON, Aug. 21. in a presidential address to the General Workers’ Federation at Oxford, said Labour'would no longertolerate the old method of foreign diplomacy, and was justified in using its whole strength in the interests of peace. If the Government could not keep the country out of war, Labour would do so.
SHIPPING TROUBLE. LONDON, Aug. 20. A crisis threatens in the. merchant . service. The officers, engineers, stokers, and seamen all urge an increase of wages. They assert the shipowners have persistently delayed consideration * of their claims. The engineers demand an immediate 50 per cent increase. The officers demand 40 per cent. The seamen and firemen have submitted a graded scale for from 30 to 40 per cent increase. It is reported the shipowners are aghast at the demands.
