SUPREME COURT CHRISTCHURCH, August 19. At tho Supreme Court, a charge of manslaughter against Robert Bruce For sytb ,arising out of a collision between a motor ear and tram ear, on May 22nd., as a result of which William Arthur Griffon, a passenger in the motor car, lost bis life., was concluded today.
Tho Jury larought in a verdict of “Not Guilty,” and the prisoner was discharged. William Cook was acquitted on a charge of having indecently assaulted a little girl.

AUCKI (AND, August 18. At the Magistrate’s Court this afternon, Air TV. Wilson S.M. gave judgment in the profiteering cliarge preferred at the instance of the .Board of Trade, against the boot merchant firm of Dudleys Ltd. In giving judgment his Worship stated that in his opinion an offence- had been, committed. The fact that the defendant’s business was of a. special nature had to b e taken into account. Had it concerned goods required by the ordinary run of buyers ho should have felt obliged to impose a heavy penalty. In the circumstances, the defendant company would be fined £IOO and £7 7s costs. At tlic request of Air AlcA’cagh, for the defendant, to fix security for an appeal on general grounds, bis AVorsliip fixed the amount at £IOO.
RETIREMENT OF TEACHERS. DUNEDIN, August IS. A memorandum from the Education Department to-day urged the Education Board to use its discretion in dispensing with the services of teachers wh’se capacity is unimpaired at retiring age. The Board held that in the interests of promotion, and therefore of eint-antiiiont in the service, it should
adhere to the present practice of retiring teachers aulomr.fically at the age fixed. The. Board’s point was that, i r the Department offered adequate inducement, the services of such retired teachers could be retained in a temporary capacity. The present position is that in such eases salary and pension together must not exceed the salary at retirement.
