Messrs W. Robinson and Son. have four seats available for a trip to Wailio Gorge on Thursday next; .Apply at qn’ce q|i garag^.—Adv't. 4 correspondent writes. —The interest in the matches to-morrow is very keen especially the local opp, Diggers v. Excelsiors, as it has a distijipt bearing as to who will win the c.up. If Excelwin they mußt certainly have a great cliancp as they beat Diggers in tile first ronpd and have won all their matches in the second round so far. It will put five teams with a good sporting chance, so the public can look forward [o p great match and as tilings stand, thp most important pf the season. Mr Hills .will referee. It is t 0 be hoped the public wjll keep up the good spirit that prevailed last Saturday, by not’ forgetting to put one shilling at least in the box, As the representative team will be picked on Saturday and all the players are keen to represent the district against Marists (Ch.ch). on Wednesday, the play should rise to a higher standard ,than usual.
A rather startling announcement lias been made jp connection with local building operations, says' a Wanganui correspondent. For some time past there has been a suspicion in certain circles that “tipping” has prevailed in local timber yards, and those who grease the '.palpi are those who receive preference over timber supplies. That the practice does obtain is confirmed by the manager of the Wanganui Sash and Door Company, who, in the course of a letter in tb e local paper, points out that tlio system of palm-greasing is done 1 not so mtich as an inducement for the ordermen to best their employers as to secure priority over timber-in the yards. Investigations proved that the greater culprit was the cpgfial liuytiu and not the standard contractor. He maintains that if the pernicious system is allowed to continue, builders will be reluctantly forced to protect them, selves, and thereby still further increase the cost of building.
