WATERED MILK

DANNEVIRKE, Aug. 20.

Three Dannevirko milk vendors appeared before the Magistrate charged with offering for sale milk containing a greater percentage of water than allowed by law. For two of the prosecutions it was shown that water got into the milk through no fault of the vendors, and fines of £5 and costs were inflicted.

In the case of F. Studer, defendant pleaded that he had been forced into the farm he occupied against his will, and could not make it pay without indulging in watering. A fine of £25 for adulterating milk, and £5 for selling same, was inflicted.

THE SUGAR WORKS. AUCKLAND, August 20. The sugar works at Chelsea are still idle owing to a coal shipment at the wharf not being discharged on account of continuous rain. \
