It is in l order to test the interpretation of the > Act that a specific case has been cited. “I have no fines for pillagers,” said J Mr S. E. I There was apparently a good deal of 1 wagering op the result of the Diggersi Ross foO(bal| match on Cass Square on ; Saturday, and jt wag very noticeable at i times that some of those financially in- ! terested ip the result of the game had • a very biassed view of the proceedings, • and failed badly to view the game in j anything like a fair standpoint. The ; barracking jjt timps was noisy and some of tliosq who ultimately “lost their tip’? cou}(| not persuade themselves that their judgmpnt pn the capabilities of . the teaips was wrong. In any event [ backers could not hayp been pleased with tho display put up by either team, j If a couple of men on either side bad • handled the ball in anything like a clean 1 manner there would have been a totally different score put up. i A correspondent says the 1 new Sergeant-jit-Arms, Major Browne, i made bis appearance in the House of i Representatives for the first time to- ! day, and created a ,most favourable imr pression. In faultless evening dress, , wearing also his miniature medals and i ribands, and carrying the ponderous gilded mace on bis right shoulder, he ' was a fine,' soldierly figure. He announced “Mr ‘Speaker” in a voice reminiscent, of the' word of command on I the parade gro.und, stqpd af attention while the short prayer wa,s read, placed the mace oil the table, and then strode down the chamber to his seat—a regular type pf the p ld cavalry officer. Hon members sat up ip admiration, and well they might, for almost one could hear pile jingle of spurs and the clank; of the cavalry sabre. The pew Sergeant-at-Arms is certajnjy an ornament to the new House. “Hpusewjves!
