DEPUTATION. A deputation from the Progress League waited on the Council, consisting of Messrs It .Wild, Pilkington, and Jeffries.

Mr Wild addressed the Council stating a committee of the Canterbury Progress League had been formed in Westland; that a representative gathering of the Canterbury League was visiting Westland next week at their own expense. The local people had to find tho means of transport in connection with the tour, which would cost upwards of £IOO and their object that evening was to ask financial support of the Council.

Mr Jeffries supported, pointing ou that if there was to be development in Westland in future, it had to come from that portion south of Hokitika. The tour of the delegation would be an important one as affeeting the future of the district. He thought the time had arrived when more should be done than welcoming a Minister to the town. He urged that assistance asked for the Progress League would prove of decided advantage to the district, and asked for as substantial vote as possible. Mr Pilkington supported the previous remarks of the deputation, pointing out that in a general movement that coupled the assistance of Canterbury people, it must prove of decided advantage to the district as a whole. He supported the appeal for financial assistance in this, their initial effort. The Mayor thanked the deputation for their views and promised consideration. Mr Blank asked if the visiting delegation were coming on their own initiative or by the invitation of the oca committee, . . He would move that £lO be voted. Seconded by Mr Coulson, who recognised that the visit was coming at a somewhat inopportune time for the Council and newly formed League. Acting on instructions an inspection "was made of the Rolleston St. drain when it was found that a number of the lSinch. earthenware pipes had collapsed. After conferring with the Mayor and Chairman of Public Works it was decided to take out the earthware pipes and replace them with 18 inch, concrete pipes. This work.has been completed, and so far'lias given good satisfaction. In Sewell Street we liad to renew a wooden culvert. A section of the Realey Street drain was also renewed during the month. A number of maintenance works were also attended to during the month.—
