At an early hour this morning} an alarm of fire was given by the watchman at Wairau hospital, who discovered an outbreak in the roof of the laundry ■and engineroom, a large lip to date new building. No fire fighting apparatus were available. The staff saved what was moveable. The building was completely gutted. The machinery includes electric plant which is badly dam aged. The cause is a mystery. Insurance £4,500 in Royal Exchange. The building and plant are valued at £9,000.

EDUCATION FINANCE. WELLINGTON, August 12. Alluding to the difficulty of meeting all demands for education improvements Hon Parr, Minister for Education told a deputation to-day that lie had been informed by the Minister of Finance that there might be a difficulty in future of raising money even for education. There were so many claims on the exchequer, but be (Mr Parr), hoped it would not be necessary to curtail the amount already allocated. Three quarters of a million was at present provided for buildings in each year, but this had to meet all demands for primary, secondary, technical and university needs. It must be remembered that owing to the increased cost of building three quarters of a million was worth only as much as £IOO,OOO in 1914.
