ROSS NEWS.
(Our Own Correspondent.)
Tli e football match Ross versus KoIcatahi played boro on Saturday resulted in a win. for the local team by 3 points to nil, a try secured by N. Scott. Through sickness and other rea. sons both teams were minus several of their best players, but the teams were fairly evenly matched. The game throughout was rather slow owing to the wet nature of the ground and consequently a, greasy ball. T. Jones, Scott and Cunningham put in some good work for the local team while J. and C. Woolhouse, O’Brien and Neilson •were most prominent of the visiting team. Mr F. Mitchell as usual gave every satisfaction as referee. The visitors were entertaind at a dance in the evening and left for home on Sunday.
General satisfaction is felt at the ap_ pointment of a doctor for the Ross district. The Board has notified th e local committee that Dr Meade has been appointed to the position and will arrive in Ross on Monday evening. The Ross Committee who have to find £lso* per annum towards the doctor’s salary are now busy canvassing the district for funds and so far are meeting with liberal support. Now that a resident medical man has been secured it is to be hoped that the whole of the residents will respond as liberally as possible to enable the amount required to be raised at an early date, and thereby assist in retaining the services of a medical man in the district.
The news of the death of Mr W. Winchester which took place at Greyniouth on Saturday evening was received in Ross with genuine regret by a large circle of friends.
The late Mr Winchester was headmaster of the Ross School for some 1(1 years, from which position he retired less than twelve months ago, several months later removing to Greyniouth where lie has resided since with his wife and family. Mr Winchester's term as ji school teacher would probably constitute a record for the Dominion having fulfilled that position for upwards of sixty years. His ability as a teacher was fully recognised and many men holding prominent positions in New Zealand to-day are not backward in giving their old teacher credit for their success in their various occupations. General sympathy is extended to the widow and family who are left to mourn their loss. •
