GANTERBUNY EDUCATION BOARD.

CHRISTCHURCH, August 6

Mr A. Pevorill, Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Education Board, reported to the Board to-day that it would have to bo very caroful in regard to maintenance during the next six months.

Tlio Chairman of the Board, Mr E. H. Andrews, said the position was a very serious one. There luid been an enormous increase in the cost of materials for building. The Board’s only chance was to battle hard with the Government for increased'grants. The present grants did not cover the demands. Strong representations should be made to tlio Minister and the cooperation of the other ’boards should be sought. Mr Peverill: “We must do something. We can’t go on like this much longer.” Mr T. Hughes wakl the present grants for maintenance, in view of the increased cost of material, were quits inadequate. The Hon J. Grimmond said the Board must have more funds, or must allow the schools to become a disgrace to tlio Board and the Government. The strongest representations possible should he made to the Government. Mr W. A. Banks said tlio Board was spending a good deal of money on buildings that should be rebuilt as they were about forty years old. The following motion was carried : “That, the strongest representations be made to the Minister of Education as to the utter inadequacy of the funds granted for the maintenance of school buildings owing to the extremely high cost now and for some time past involved in the repairs of buildings, which cost the Board feels that the Department did not fully realise when filing the amounts of the grants; and that this resolution be embodied in a- remit to the Conference of the Education Board’s Association.”
