SOUTH ISLAND COUNTRY REPS. CARTERTON, Aug 5. The South Island Country Team met Wairarnpn to-day in fine cold weather. The game opened to Wairarapa’s advantage, they having a slight breeze behind them. The match was characteristic by the forward play of both teams, Wairarapa being superior. Towards the end of the first spell tlie Wairarapa backs commenced work, but the South Island men intercepted the passes, and a number of forces resulted. From a loose scramble, Wairarapa forwards got possession, and worked the hall right into the White (South Island) 25. From here James dived over the line, and scored. Shortly after, from a mark, Groufee for Wairarapa, goaled. In the second spell the White forwards showed to more advantage, and hack play on both sides developed, making the game decidedly more interesting. From a brilliant passing run from half way, Groube ran in and brought the Wairarapa score up to 9. The Whites then returned to attack, and some pretty play enabled Nelson to score. No further score resulted, and the game ended :—Wairarapa 9 f South Island 3.

TARANAKI V. MANAWATU. STRATFORD, Aug 5. Manawatu met Taranaki this afternoon in splendid weather, there being only a little breeze. The attendance was about 1500. It was an interesting game. Th. visitors’ backs wore the smarter lot, but on the whole there was little to choose between the teams. The final score was Taranaki 14; Manawatu 9.
