1 '{’lie l'o(lowing will represent the Diggers against Kiwis, to-morrow—A. Dowell, Morgan, Owens, Michel, B. Dowell, Wells, Tainui, Wilson, Carley, ; Naneekivell, Muir, Cutbusli, Askew, Brown, Little, Inglis and Keogan, Saturday’s ('bnstylsqre.U “Press” ' says the logg-threatened rise in the price of wax matches lias now realised, and yesterday the prices were increased, following on an advance notified by | the manufacturers in Wellington, i Plaids (small round boxes) remain at Id, hut flat boxes now cost 3d each, and tins, which in pre-war times wore 2d, and latterly 4d, now cost 5d per box. Very large lots of potatoes are stack- ; ed in the Willowbridgc (South Canter-

About 8 o’clock on Saturday morning a large school of whales made its appearance in the Napier roadstead (says the “Telegraph”). Jusit- exactly how many there were is unknown, hut those who were fortunate enough to see them state that there was a very large number. At one time no less than erglit of them were “spouting” at once, and it was a frequent sight to see three or more “spouting” at the same time. The whales were first seen off the Breakwater, and they swam towards the Petane beach, approaching quite near to the entrance to the inner harbour. Tlie appearance of the whales so close in is a rare occurrence in these waters,'and the novelty ensued a great deal of interest.
