When tlie s.s. Tahiti arrived at Auckland from Sydney, a couple of young men were handed over to the police ns stowaways. One of them, Janies Herbert Johnson, stated that lie was try- ' ing to get to America, and lie wanted to he signed on as a member of the crew. Tlie other youth, John Francis McCarthy, laid bad this country as his objective when lie hid on the ship. They «atiie to light after the ship was a few hours out from Sydney. “There were about 200 men oil the ship looking for work before she sailed,” stated the purser, when the men came before Mr J. E. Wilson. S.M., “and f believe they were among the number.” -Both of the accused stated that they were looking for work among a great number of others, having no intention of stowing away, and got accidentally carried away. Johnson said he was a sailor, and had fallen asleep while resting. waking up to find, that the ship had sailed. He wanted to get work on a ship sailing to America, lie said. As the ship did not desire the defendants as an addition to the crew, they were remanded in custody, pending an arrangement with tlie shipping company to take them hack to Sydney.
