A long-standing motion by the Mayor “That tho Council take the necessary steps to obtain legislative authority to enable it to construct harbour works on the estuary of tho Hoathcote river, in the vicinity of Heatheote bridge,’’ came before the City Council on Monday night. The Mayor said the Council had legislative authority to build harbour works on any tidal river. Mr Forrest Marshall was prepared to carry out the work for not more thfl.U two 'millions, (t-ncl would provide a first-class harbour. The Council would not bind itself in any way by passing the resolution. The matter would come before a select committee of thp House, wjiich WQiijd consider all the different propositions plit forward, , Cr Langley, who seconded the motion, said the Tunnel road scheme was now dead,
Th e motion was put and lost by 8 to 7, the voting being—Ayes—Crs Andrews, Herbert, Langley, Burgoyne, Flesher, Williams, and - the Mayor. Noes—Crs Beauland, Cooke, Sullivan, Hunter, Armstrong, Jamieson, Agar, and McKeilar.
