The Government authorities have authorised the enlistment of a number of distinguished ex-army officers for service with the Irish Constabulary in. Ireland. LONDON, July 28. Irish newspapers revive hopes of a peaceful settlement. The Irish “Times” expresses its disbelief that “force used to the uttermost” will be adopted. It suggests that a generous offer for a political settlement might be accepted. The “Freeman’s Journal,” which may now be regarded as a supporter of Sinn Fein, calls for a truce. It advises Mr Lloyd George to propose a parley between representatives of the British control and the Irish Republicans, in order to find n basis for a settlement on lines of Dominion Home Rule, leaving V Ulster to decide by county option what it will do. v On the contrary, the Sinn Feiners
Executive have issued a statement. They taunt the Ministers with describe ing as “rusliing into anarchy” in Ireland, what they called “rightly struggling to be free,” in Poland. The statement adds that the most convincing proof of the solidarity of Ireland for a Republic is the Governmen.t’s inability to find a so-called “authoritative group”, ready to assist in breaking up the movement for independence.”
A SINN FEIN HERO! LONDON, July 28
The “Evening News” says: “If Archbishop Manniz is allowed to land in Ireland, ho will be treated as a hero by the Sinn Feiners. There is extraordinary interest now being taken in Dr Mannix’s movements. ' Yet the Cabinet has come to a decision that he shall not he allowed to land in the United Kingdom. This can readily be carried out.”
