FRENCH IN SYRIA.
'By Electric Telegraph—Coiyright.i THE FRENCH ULTIMATUM. LONDON, July 26. There appears to he an uncertainty with reference to the French ultimatum to Syria, and subsequent fighting, is due to the delay of- x a telegram ordering, the Arab Army to withdraw. After the Arab Government accepted the French conditions a telegram was received from the Arab commander two hours after the expiry of the ultimatum. Meanwhile General Gourand’s force advanced, arousing indignation among tile Arabs, who ordered defence measures. The people readily responded. The JSyrian Congress is apparently dissatisfied with the result. Negotiations were adjourned for six months.
