I.WSR riUiHH ASSGOMI'IoN. OOPVKIGHI’.i CHRISTCHURCH ITEMS. CHRISTCHRCH, July 27. Cyril Montgomery, aged thirteen. was fatally injured on a Richmond tram last night. The Chief H.jGr. Growcott, has received notice of his transfer to Wellington. PRICE. OF CONFECTIONERY. DUNEDIN, July 13. In an interview as to whether the advance in the price of sugar is likely to affect the manufacture of sweets and biscuits, Mr R. Hudson, of Hudson and Co., the largest inanutfai-turing firm in their line in New Zealand, said: The rise in the price of sugar may ultimately affect production here, but at present it is giving us no grave concern, and we do not anticipate any changes so far as our factory is concerned. To begin with, very little-con-fectionery is noy imported. The tremendous price of sugar in Britain stops the importation. The retail price at Home is about Is 2d, and wholesale :t runs to nearly £IOO per ton, or more than double the price in New Zealand. As a consequence, New Zealand is driven back on to her own resources and the trade is very busy. We are far liehind with our orders. Putting these two things together—the limitation of the British supply, and the steadiness of the demand here—l do not see any reason to fear a lessening of our manufacture, particularly in view of the fact that the rise in price to the consumer will not be at all serious. There must, of course, lie some advance in price. On some goods, such as are ed boiled lollies, which are practically nothing but sugar, the price will go up about 3d per lb. In respect to-other confectionery, the increase will lie about ljd or 2d—nothing to make one sing out about. As to biscuits, sugar is only one ingredient, and the rise will be only about 2d per lb in some lines, and perhaps Id in others. FATAL ACCIDENT. / CHRISTCHURCH, July 27. George Ryde, aged 17, while cycling ot Oxford this afternoon, fell from his machine and was dead when picked up, supposedly from heart disease.
