COMMERCIAL NEWS.
HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT WELLINGTON, July 21. The Department of Agriculture lias received the following cablegram, (fated July 17th., from the High Commissioner:— Meat, —There is no change in the price of imported meat. Owing to English supplies decreasing, prices have advanced. Beef is quoted at Is 5d per lb., mutton is Is sjd, and lamb Is 9d. Blitter.—The average price of English butter is £l6 10s per cwt. Small supplies of Irish are coming forward. Crjea. mery is worth £l6 to £l7 per cwt. Cheese.—The demand for English is limited to £8 12s and £9 2s per cwt. Tile demand for Canadian is moderate, but prices have slightly declined. Quotations—Spot £7 18s to £8 25., c.if. £7 12s to £7 14s.
Hemp.—The manila market is firm and advancing. J. grade, July-August shipment, is worth £64. August-Octo-ber shipment has been sold at £65 14s. Manila shipments from January Ist to July 12th total 652,000 bales, as against 603,000 for the same period last year. The New Zealand manket is very quiet, business being practically confined to parcels already shipped. High points has been sold at £54, fair at £53, and May and July shipments at £53 and £sl respectively. Wool.—The sales have closed. There was a large attendance of Homo and Continental buyers, and a fair demand for good combing merinos and fine and medium crossbreds at a advance of 5 rent values of New Zealand cross-breds largely withdrawn. The average curren tvalues of New Zealand cross-breds are:—Fine 2s 6d to 3s 4d, medium Is lOd to 2s 6d, coarse Is 4d to Is 8d (nominal) .
