There was a good deal of speculation as to the legislation the Government is preparing on the subject of taxation for the improvement of the roads. Mr Stuart Wilson of the New Zealand Au tomobiio Union states he has it on good authority there is the intention on the part of the Government to grant rebates on taxation to fanners owning motor vehicles. SCHOOL TEACHERS’ APPEAL. AUCKLAND, July 24, The Auckland Teachers’ Appeal Board allowed 23 out of 162 appeals against their position on the grading list, involving reduced salaries. Mr Caughey, Assistant Director of Education, explained that the extent of redistribution of the reduction was left entirely to the discretion of the Auckland inspectors, and the Department recorded the result exactly as supplied by the inspectors. Where appeals were successful the appellants had brought forward evidence that their efficiency had increased to a greater extent than was recognised by the insj>ectors, or that some circumstances, or facts, had not been shown to tho inspectors at the time of the grading. Practically all the decisions of the Boai d were unanimous.
THE MINERS’ DISPUTE. WELLINGTON, July 25. Representatives of the coal mine owners and the New Zealand Coal, Gold Shale, Quarry and Tunnel Workers’ Federation met on Saturday for tho purpose of considering the points in disput in connection with the interpretation of the agreement arrived at a few months ago. Tho Prime Minister presided. The Conference is not completed and will meet again on Monday morning.
