WELLINGTON, July 23. THE COUNCIL. The Council met at 2.30 p.jn. ' Hon-. McGregor moved the second reading of the Crimes Amendment Bill, but Sir F. D. Beil and other members objected that tho measure was not in order, and anyway it was'impossible to permit the abolition of the Grand Jury, which was the public’s great safeguard. Mr McGregor withdrew the Bill. The Council rose at 3.37 p.in. THE HOUSE. The House met, at 2.30 p.m.
Hon Mr Massey, replying to a question said further markets’ for New Zea- I land lamb could be found, and when the Imperial contract ended, Government would do all possible to develop I a market in America-. Government was ! doing its best to keep down the rate of I interest to local bodies. I The Islands, Harbour and Mount Hutt County Bills were read a first itilile. Amendments made in committee in | the Gaining Act Amendment and Judicature Amendment Bills were agreed to, •and both measures wore read a third time, and passed. | Tho Arms Bill was read a second time on the voices, and Magistrate’s Court Amendment Bill read a second : time. Both Bills were put through Committee, read a third time and passsed, At the evening sitting of the House, Mr Holland moved a motion disagreeing with the Speaker's ruling, preventing his motion re self-determination for Ireland, going on the order paper. After a brief debate- the House divided when the motion was defeated by 41 to 4 The House rose at 8.20 p.m.
