CORRESPONDENCE
A PROTEST,
(To the Editor.)
Sir,- At a meeting of the members of the Mananui branch of the Timber Workers Union, which was held to discuss a statement which was circulated through the Press Association, _ the following motion was carried unanimously, and a copy was sent to the Executive of the West* Coast Timber Workers' Union, and we would be pleased if you would insert it in the columns of your paper.—l ain etc., T. CARLEY, Union Delegate. Mananui, July 20th. 1920. ENCLOSURE. “That this meeting of Mananui members of the Westland Timber Workers Union views with indignation the statement circulated through the New Zealand Press Association by four irresponsible members of our Union, who, to all intents land purposes are members only, more through necessity than choice, such statements being utterly at variance with the aims and objects of industrial unionism. We also endorse th e •action of our Secretary in bringing the ! exploitation of the Great Western Timber Company under the notice of the Minister in Charge of the forestry Department, acting as he did, on instructions from u general meeting held in Greymouth on June sth last. We also desire to express our strong disapproval of the Government, who, while professedly opposed to land aggregation, gives its acquiescence to a scheme that places such an immense tract of valuable timber country iti the bands ol a few profiteering speculators. Furthermore we call upon your Executive to, do its utmost in soliciting the earnest support of all the members of. this Union opposing the scheme of-a few exploiters, who seek to deprive the people of New Zealand of one of their most valuable assets.”
A WARNING, (To the iKdjtor). Sir,—There seems to be a deal of sickness at the present time in town and country and it behoves the Health authorities to be on the alert and trj and prevent a recurrence of 1918, am: tho St. John's 'Ambulance Society should also be on the move. . I know of one instance of an elderly lady anJ hot - daughter and also a grand-daughter who are all down with the flu and cannot get anyone to nurse tlie*i. Those who have been looking after them have been taken had with the flu themselves. This is only one of the many such cases and the Hospital is full. Why not close the school, same as was done two years ago. It wants nipping in the bud and now is tlie time to do so. T am etc., W. A. COMPORT. Rinui, July 22nd., 1920.
