(By Electric Telegraph—CoPj ight.) a . HOW the race went. (Received this day, at 9.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, July 20. The yacht race course was on a reach to the south-south-east, then a beat to west by north,, then on a reach to north-easlj by north. The Shamrock started at 12hrs. 15mins,- 48secs.; the Resolute at 12hrs. lGniins., 2(>sees. The Shamrock had a difficulty with a balloon sail, and the Resolute passed to leeward. At 12.22, the wind was soft. Sailsetting on tile Shamrock was bungled. The Resolute sailed along smoothily. The Shamrock’s head sail did not fill. At 12.50, the Resolute’s balloon-sail was going splendidly. j At 12.55 the Shamrock was half a j mile astern to the weather. ! At 1 p.m., the Resolute lost the wind, | and at 1.10 the Shamrock passed to windward. At 1.25, she led by a quarter of a mile, and the breeze was hauling to the south. At 1.45, the Shamrock the first break of a south-wester, and led by half a mile. 1
At 2 p.nf., .the Resolute had regained n quarter of a mile and took the starboard tack for the mark, three miles away. At 2 p.m., the Shamrock did ditto, and turned at 2.28.28. The Resolute turnedrtit 2.32.41. The Shamrock’s little triangular forestay sail was wonderful, being always full. • ■At 3.15, the Shamrock was loading by nearly a mile. (Received this day at 10.20 a.m.) NEW YORK, July 20. In the America Gup race Shamrock IV reached the second mark at 4.26.29 and the Resolute at 4.43,36. When the Shamrock turned the Resolute was gaining. A close race was then probable. Nearing the finish line a big hole appeared in the Shamrock’s balloon jib sail. The Shamrock finished at 5.37.58.
HISTORY OF THE CUP RACES. The America Cup is a 1.00-gujnea cup put up by the Royal Yacht Squadron at Cowes in 1851, and won by the yacht America. Since then British yachts have crossed (he Atlantic on numerous occasions, and made fruitless attempts to regain the trophy. The dates and results of the rapes arc 1870. —British yacht Cambria came tenth. 1871. —-British yacht Livonia won one race out «f a series of five. 1876.—Canadian yacht (buntess of Dnfferin lost in two races against the Madeline, 1881.—Canadian Atalanta was beaten by the Mischief, Between 1882 and 1893, the Puritan beat the Genestu, the Mayflower beat the Galatea,, and the Volunteer heat the Thistle, 1893.—Vigilant heat' 1 ord Dunraveii’s Valkyrie IT. 1895. —Defender beat Valkyrie ITT. .beat Shamrock (Royal Ulster Yacht Club) in three races. 1901.—Columbia hear Shamrock IT ir. three races. 1903.—Reliance heat .Shamrock ITT. 1914.—Shamrock TV went to America, but the war caused postponement of the contest. >
THE TROPHY. The America Cup is described as an elegant vase of silver, decimated with the head of the British Lion and the American Eagle as emblematic of the two countries. It was manufactured by Mr J. W. Benson, of Old Bond Street. London. The body of the cup is enriched with a- bas-relief of a yacht race, sur_ rounded by ornaments and richly decorated' with emblems of the sea, The cover is surmounted by two figures representing Brittania receiving the «liullenge from America. The cup is mount ed on a base formed of models of anchors ,lifebuoys, blocks and rudder, in-tert-wftied with rope around a model of a capstan in oak, which supports the cup.
