In the Commons, replying to questions, Hon Bonar Law stated the Government’s Irish policy was unchanged, namely to restore law and order in Ireland by al! means in their power and simultaneously to carry out the Government of Ireland Bill. Government considered in view of the powers under the Defence of the Realm regulations, the proclamation of martial law in Ireland would not provide a satisfactory method of dealing with the present situation, but Cabinet was considering whether additional powers could usefully be secured by new legislation. Mr Bonar Law added that those best able to judge thought we were getting the troubles better in hand. He thought it not reasonable to judge in terms of murders from one week to another. AFFAIRS IN IRELAND. (Received this day, at 9.30 a.m.) . LONDON, July 19. The military have thrown a strong cordon around Cork. All citizens are ordered to be indoors at ten in the evening. When the Coroner attended for an inquest on Smyth, only nine out of eighteen jurors were present. The inquest was abandoned. Only twelve out of 296 common jurors answered the call at the opening of the Assizes. Sinn Feiners set fire to and destroyed three waggons containing military goods at Kingsbrjdge station, Dublin.
