by Electric Telegraph—Cop/rsgm 1 DR MAN NIX AND DE VALERA. NEW YORK, July 19. Archbishop Man nix and President Re Valera delivered speeches to the great Madison Square Gordon gathering here on Sunday. There was a large gathering of Irish and Americans. Mr De Valera declared that as President of tlie Irish Republic, he had signed an order authorising the young men of Ireland to light conscription. Archbishop Munnix said:—“lf it were really true, as represented during ! war, that Ireland’s eneinv had been Germany’s then Ireland would now have her freedom. If Mr Do Valera could have come before the late Peace Conference and say that the wrongs being suffered by Iriaiid were due to German, not English oppression, then the Peace Conference would give Ireland immediate independence, but because Ireland's wrongs arc inflicted by the English, Mr De Valera could not go before the Peace Conference.” Dr Munnix remarked; “If a popular plebiscite wore taken now in the United States, it would show that an overwhelming majority of the American people stand for the formal recognition b.v America of the independence of Ireiand.”
