V.eLief k TeleglaUia GERMANS’ COAL AGREEMENT. SPA, July 16. The Germans liaye signed a coal agreement with the Allies. Spa messages state that Von. at an afternoon session, proceeded to argue, when M. Millerand intervened, and demanded p direct affirmative or negative as to the Allied coal terms. Von Simons ignored the request. Thereupon M. Millerand whispered to Lloyd George, who rose and politely invited the Germans to retire to a tearoom until they could answer “ Yes,” or “ No.” The Germans returned at 8.45 in the evening. They signed the agreement, but with a reservation concerning the Allies’ claim to occupy the Ruhr region in the event of ally non-fulfilment of the agreement signed.
SHARING OF REPARATION. LONDON, July 17.. At Spa, an agreement has been signed »
between Britain, France; Italy, Japqn, Belgium, and Pprtugal, prqviding that the German reparation payments s]iall be divided as follows: —Britain 22 per cent, France 52, Italy 10, and Japan qnd Portugal each 0.75, and Belgium 8, The remaining 6J- per cent is reserved fop. Greece. Roumania- and others. Provision is also niade for dividing up the Austro-Hungarian arid Bulgarian moneys.
The Allies are undertaking to facilitate the issue of German loans destined for Germany’s internal requirements, and for a prompt discharge of German debts to'the Allies. : >
SPA CONFERENCE ADJOURNS. SPA, July 17. The Allied Conference has adjourned. It resumes a fortnight hence at Geneva. LLOYD GEORGE SATISFIED. (Received this day at 8 a.m.) SPA, July 17. Hon Lloyd George told the press correspondents that ho regarded the conference as a great' success. The results would soon be apparent. A great ad- ~ cance was made towards peace. Both sides had reached a better' understanding of the problems. Even the French, who at first were sceptical, now agree that the conference was a success. Referring to the effect of the Bolshevik successes, Hon Lloyd George said the Gorman delegation was entirely. antiBolshevik. He pointed out that disarmament was more important than coal as future relations depended upon it. He had undisguised admiration for Von Simons ability and courage. '
