An offer by the Yale University to give, or lend to the Dominion a large series of solar physics and Jiigli class astronomical work in general, provided that a good house is built for them, and their upkeep and general establishment provided, was discussed by the Otago Institute on Tuesday night. Professor Benson said there was probably no place in the world more suit-, able from every point of view for such work than Central Otago. A committee was appointed to endeavour to secure acceptance of the offer. GENERAL BIRDWOOD. HASTINGS, July 13. General Sir William Birdwood and Lady Birdwood who have been spending a few days at the borne of Sir Andrew Russell, Tunanui, Hastings, were to-day tendered a civic reception, when the welcome was popular and enthusiastic. The body of a newly born female child was found in the lake in the Domain vesterdav afternoon.
OVER A CLIFF. A CAR DROPS 80 FEET. THAMES, July 15. The Coromandel-Tliames service car went over a bank at Lynch’s Hill yesterday where the drop is said to be eighty feet. It overturned four times; landing wheels up on the beach. The driver was shaken and one passenger was unconscious. Another, a wellknown commercial man, had a broken collar hone, a child escaping unhurt. The injured were removed to Coromandel hospital. a OBITUARY. WAIMATE July 15. A meeting of proprietors of Otago and Southland country newspapers was held yesterday. The object of the meeting was to extend the Country newspaper proprietors in trade, political and industrial directions. A very representative attendance decided to form a New Zealand Country Press Association on similar lines to that ’n New South Wales. Air de la. Perelle (Winton Records) was appointed President and Air Fisher (Otautau Standard) Secretary. The. President and Secretary authorised to* communicate with country newspapers throughout •the Dominion inviting support and cooperation. Enthusiasm was displayed on connection with the project.
