HOKITIKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE
MONDAY, JULY 12th.
The Committee uiet at 7.30 p.m. Present—Messrs W. H. Shannon (Chairman), J. Lloyd, F. \Y. Fedderseu, A. Aitkon, \V. E. Richards, T. W. Bruce and S. J. Preston (Hon. Secretary). Apologies were made for the absence of Mr Stevenson, and llov. Purchas.
The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved.
IN WARD CORRKSPONDENOJ'
Freni H. Biguell, Greymouth, promising support to application for portion of Dillman’s schools for extra room and asking for support at coming election.—Received.
From F. Varney, Health Inspector stating he had investigated complaint and reported to the District Health officer Christchurch, and that oil enquiry it was found that there was only overcrowding of one scholar in the sth. and 6th. classrooms, which did not seem to warrant fiflrtlier action. —Received; It was resolved to write to the Rector to enquire a.s to the actual space.
From Mißs Dixon, teacher, South Spit, reporting the average for June was 16.2 out of a roll number of 18; and stating the repairs to the two chimneys and woodshed had not yet been attended to. —Received.
From J. Brunton (Rector) reporting the attendance for four weeks ended, July 9th. was primary average 3fio, .roll number 327; secondary average 48; roll number 55. Totals 348 and 382. So far the attendance has not been much affected by sickness. Miss Chesterman is at present absent owing to illness; Dr Eleanor Baker and Nurse 'Anderson were medically examining the children of the school; the children’s lunch room is now in good order, and the arrangements made for the cocoa lunch are very satisfactory; that the school team had again won the football match against the Grey team and that half the proceeds of the gate had been donated to the school football club by the. Southern Division Executive. That thanks were due to the Football Executive and also to Mr McCullough who had successfully coached the - team. —Rieceivcd. The Committee decided to convey a letter of thanks to the Football Executive and to Mr McCullough. The Visiting Committee’s report was received and approved, and Messrs Stevenson and Feddersen were appointed visitors for ths ensuing period. Accounts amounting to £4O 17s 2d were passed for payment. The Chairman reported as to theresult of the deputation which waited on the Hokitike High School Board.— Received. It was resolved on the motion of Messrs Aitken, and Lloyd to formplly apply to the High School Board for assistance in connection vritli the appointment of a Secretary, and for assistance for payment of travelling expenses of country children.
Mr Bruce expressed his dissatisfaction at the result of the deputation to the High School Board and moved that application be made to the Hon. Minister for Education for all possible assistance in their endeavour to establish a hostel in Hokitika. for country boys attending the Hokitika District- High School. Seconded by Mr Lloyd and carried.
The Chairman stated he had written away asking for particulars as to the man.gera.ent of hostels on the Eiast Coast and this information should be available for next meeting. The' Committee than rose.
