NOMAD IMPRISONED. TAIHAPE, July 8
An unkempt, primeval looking man, having several years’ growth of hair on bis face and head, was run to earth in the back country yesterday. He bad subsisted on whatever camp his yray. For four: or five yparg lie had evaded the police and others, running like a deer, and jumping like a dog. Eventually ho was run down by a horseman, who bad lain in wait for him an Cottrell’s Oruamatua Station. He gave his name as Harry Willis, and bis age as fifty, but lie appeared sturdy and j muscular. He bad wandered the hill j country between Taihape and Napier for upwards of four years. At the Tai. hape Magistrate’s Court lie pleaded not ■ guilty to a charge of being an idle and disorderly person. He refused to give evidence, or make any explanation, say- ■ ing “I keep everything to myself.” He , was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment in Wellington gaol.
A MILITARY DEFAULTER. DUNEDIN, July 13. Tho promulgation of the decision of the Courtmartial in the case of Private Arthur Gregory McCarthy, heard on Friday, has been made. The accused jvas found guilty and sentenced to twelve months imprisonment, but the convening officer, Lieut. Colonel McDonald, would not confirm the sentence. On release by the military, McCarthy was immediately arrested by the police and appeared before the Police Court this morning and charged with using, and continuing to use, a name other than that by which he was described, in the published list of military defaulters. A remand was granted on the application of the police to tliq 21st.
