THE SCHOOL MATCH

The game between the Grey and Boldin ka sehools for the Wright-Stephenson Cup took place on Cass Square, and proved a very easy win for Hokitika by 32 points (ten trios, one converted) to nil. From the large score run up it will be gathered that the visitors were substantially beaten. The local team have a smart set of backs, and with Wogan at five-eighths as the pivot, they gave their opponents a busy>time. The lads handled the ball well, and scores came regularly, mainly from passing rushes. Wogan scored six tries, Sliaw three"tries,.and Butland one. Only one try was converted, Wogan piloting the hall over. With the visitors out-match-ed,. they did not show to much advantage, but it was some of the lighter lads who gave the better exposition, one or two of them handling excellently. Mr Downey had charge of the game.

DIGGERS V. KIWI. Tigs senior cup fixture had been causing n?uch interest, and speculation, and attracted a fair •umber of spectators, there being a considerable amount of barracking. The game ended in a "in for Diggers by nine points (a try scored by Wells, a goal from a mark and a penalty goal, and kicked by B. Dowell and Carley) to nil. On the play the Diggers deserved their win, and they appeared to have their opponents fairly rattled for most of the game, their own mistakes being mainly the cause of their defeat. The opening sensation was a characteristic dash by Wells, after a passing run, when he scored a good try. The Kiwi’s had some good opportunities, which tliey allowed to go, notably a break through by Stopforth, when he intercepted a pass, but he lost a- fine opening by not going straight for the line. The play was up and down the field with the play in favour of the Diggers, who had a shot within range, that Dowell piloted over with a good kick. The score at half-time was 6 to 0. The second half was a fairly even go, but the play was not fast. When the game had gone half an hour, a mark in front of the goal was enhanced with a good kick. Kiwi’s made-desperate efforts to score, tut they lacked precision, apd mistakes let them down time after time, and the name ended without further score:. The Kiwi team’s play was disappointing, while the Diggers put, far more vim into the game, and had their opponents thinking most of the time. Mr Houston was referee. . .
