Tho Hoard met at Christchurch on Friday last:—Present: Mr E. H. Andrews, (Cliairmnn), Hon J. Grinnnond, M.L.fJ., and Messrs C. H. Opie, W. P. Spencer, T. Hughes, A. Peverill, G. W. .\rinitage, J. Maze, H. J. Bignell, TV. A. Banks, J. Jamieson and C. S. Howard.
Regarding tile Department’s request that the Hoard should express its views on tile proposal to establish hostels in convenient centres for pupils who live too far away from a school, the Board was recommended to reply that “it is not in favour of the hostel scheme, as it believes that the parents generally would object; as an initial step it ,waa suggested that the present boarding allowance of .Is per week should he dbubled. A letter was received from the Department approving of a grant of £l3. IKK) for the purpose of erecting a Technical High School at Greymouth. It was agreed to call lib- tenders for the work of erecting the building as soon as the plans have been completed.
It was resolved to apply for a grant for a new school building at Wataroa. It was resolved to apply to the Department for a grant for the erection of a teacher’s residence at Camerons. A letter was received from the ratepayers and householders association, urging the speedy erection of the selwol building at Cobden. The Stafford Committee was.authorized to accept a tender for clearing the grounds at the residence. It was resolved to apply to the Westland County Council for an unused gravel reserve as a school site, at Upper Koiterangi and to ask the Land Board to give the Council an equal area in exchange; also to reserve additional land behind the gravel reserve, vjhen the lease fails in.
Reports were received from West Coast Members on matters referred to and the following decisions arrived at:—
'Manama.—Application to be made for a grant for shelter shed, and £25 grant, ed for clearing the ground. Wait ah a.—Grant of £53 made to the Committee for levelling and fencing. Hokitika.- The Committee’s application for materia] for buildings at Hill-, jhistown and Goldsborough to provide extra accommodation for infant clauses was referred to the foreman and Inspec_ tor for report.
