At the Magistrate's Court, Patrick Joseph Flannagan, a book-maker, pleaded guilty to twelve charges of making bets in public places and licensed promises. Ho was fined £2O for each offence. MINERS’ FEDERATION CONFERENCE. WELLINGTON, July 2. The annual conference of New Zealand Miners’ Federation opened to-day, all Unions being represented except Wnrontii, Avoca, North Cape and Mataura. Only formal business was transacted today. The conference will probably last for some time.
A MURDER CHARGE. DUNEDIN, July 2. The icircuimsfcanccs concerning the death of Olive May Pile, aged twenty, who was found dead in a house n (3outih Dunedin, occupied by Helen Clegg, were inquired into at the Police Court to-day, when the'woman Glegg was charged with the murder-of the girl in question. The evidence included that of Tljomas Burdott, a surfaceman employed by the Railway Department, residing at Oamaru who said he met the deceased seven or eight month ago and went out with her several times. , About four or five weeks ago deceased and her filler saw witness and a fed' days after witness came to Dunedin and met the deceased next <p/y and proceeded to accused’s house. Accused asked what they were going to do. He told accused he did not care about the cost. He was prepared to pay. She replied that it would cost £2O. Witness paid her, and witness took his departure leaving the girl in, the house. He returned' to Oamaru and the following Monday received a telegram from Dunedin, “All well, M. Pile." He also received a letter from May. He destroyed the. telegram and letter. He went To Dunedin and visited the accused’s house and found the girl had been dead about an hour. Accused told witness “Get away as quickly ns possible, and not say anything about iti” The hearing is proceeding,
