At the Burnside stuck market Lq-day, there was a moderate yarding of good sheep, but a Christchurch firm, acting on behalf of Australian agents, bought up 201)9 fat sheep, which go straight to Melbourne by the steamer Kauri. It is understood they have been purchased on behalf of the butchering trade in the Victorian capital. Most of these sheep came from North Otago and South Canter hu rv.

The effect of this purchase was a sharp rise in values. Lambs were in short supply, and the same applies to pigs, enhanced values being obtained for the latter. On the other hand, fat cattle were in full supply, although the quality could have been improved upon. Fat Cattle.—A large yarding of medium quality, a total of 230 head being offered for sale. A number of pens contained animals in an unfinished condition. At the commencement of the sale the prices obtained were a shade below those of last. week, hut at the close prices had advanced 5s to 10s a head, compared with last sale. Prime bullocks realised from £2l to £25 10s, medium £l7 10s to £2O, light and unfinished sorts from £l4 upwards. Store Cattle.—A small yarding, very few of those penned showing signs of quality or breeding. The bulk of the yarding comprised young cattle in backward condition. The demand was very slack and what sales were effected were hardly up to late rates. Sheep.—A small yarding, numbering 1577 head of mixed quality, being mostly medium to inferior. On account of the small number of good sheep forward bidding was extremely brisk, and prices advanced Gs a head over last week’s rates. Prime wethers realised from 50s to 595; medium -14 s to 18s; light and unfinished sorts from 35 s upwards. Prime ewes realised from 48s to 555; medium 42s to 465: light and aged, from 30s upwards;. Lambs.—A small yarding, totalling 390 head. The quality was qpt up to last week’s standard. The values obtained, taking quality into consideration, were on a par with those which ruled last week, ranging from 23s to 37s Gd a head.
