That a Commission of Experts should bu set up to- examine the present system of public accounts in order to prevent the fraudulent manipulation of public money. That the service should be controlled by some political board, including a member elected by the Public Service Association. That the Government should provide for the statutory recognition of the As. sociation. 3s RISE IN TIMBER. CHRISTCHURCH, June 30. With the sanction of the Board of Trade, the price of timber wa.s advanced this morning in the city of Christchurch by 3s per hundred feet. The rise will take effect to-morrow. The increase is explained as being due to an advance in price being made by the millers and to an extra rise in the freights charged on ships from the West Coast. A leading Christchurch builder 10-day stated that this increase would represent about 10 per cent on timber costs, and about 7V per cent, on the total cost of building. PRICE OF GOLD. WELLINGTON, July 1. The Treasury supplies tin- following official information:—The price of gold to-day is £5 3s 7d per ounce, for shipments to America and India. REMARKABLE POLL RESULT. TE AWAMUTU, June 30. On the proposal to raise £120,000 for electric reticulation in Te Awamutu the electric power district poll today was unanimously carried • no votes being recorded against the proposal. R.S.A. RESOLUTIONS. TIMARU, June 30. Special general meetings of the Timaru and Temuka Branches of the R.S.A. unanimously carried the same resolution as that which the Dunedin branch carried, protesting against the stoppage of' advances to soldiers for .settlement purposes by the Government. A Wellington telegram also records that a largely attended meeting of the Wellington Returned Soldiers’ Association last night discussed, the slowing down of these advances under the Discharged Soldiers’ Settlement Act, several members of Parliament being present. The meeting passed a ••e----solution on the subject as framed by (lie headquarters of the R.S.A.
