At a certain dance held recently >n Christchurch (says a. Christchurch exf change), the following notice was posted up in tlie ladies’ dressing room:
“Sister hopes that tlie gorls will not smoke to-night.” The notice suggests fairly plainly that smoking among women and girls in far from being on the wane and inquiries made in the city confirm that view. ..

A writer commenting on the Palmerston North sheep dog trials last week, said with the exception, perhaps of the annual school football matches, the most popular competition at the 1 show js the sheep dog trials, 'lhe. won--1 derful sagacity displayed by a sheep dog holds the interest of the onjooker. Sheep are stupid animals .and fori a dog to herd three of them in a small ling and hold them there is not an easy undertaking. . That feat accomplished, he is required to drive them through a .narrow gateway across a raised bridge and finally yard the sheep in a pen. Twenty six dogs were entered for tho open competition, and some of the .exhibitions that were given bordered on the .marvellous. In one particular case a dog succeeded in driving three sheep, to the top of a bridge when one “broke back.” The clog set off, after the wanderer, and at the same time kept an eye on the sheep on the bridge. If they moved he was back at once and eventually he got the three across amidst the plaudits of the spectators.
j On Saturday afternoon on Cass | Square there will he an inter-schools ; j football match between the Greymouth • ! and Hokitika schools. Games between schools always cause considerable inter- . est and much partisan ship, and Sati urdny’s panic will lie no exception. It is confidently expected that the game ! will be a good one. The local school boys j have got a fairly good combination and they should have a very good show of holding .up their end. In connection with the game, and the senior match that wil follow, a charge of one shilling will he made for entrance to Cass square. Half of the day’s takings are to be given to the Hokitika School team’s ' funds, and it is to be hoped that the onlookers will not fail to make the “gate” a substantial one and show J that their interest in the game is sufficient to enable them to help in a fitranJ eial way, small ns it will be. Tickets I for admission are in the bands of the scholars for sale. 1 There is a great scarcity in many , sorts of goods-—in linens, carpets, and j linoleums especially (said a Dunedin ' draper to a representative of t.he j “Evening Star”). Carpets are being doled out by the makers as though they were diamonds, and the retail price of one make lias gone lip, by comparison with 1913, from 8s lid to 32s 6d per yard. There was a 10 per cent advance by the manufacturers rilinoleum in January last, this affecting goods yet to arrive in New Zeaßind, since the deliveries arc all very much behind hand and a further rise of 10 per cent is advised by cable from this week. So far as we can make out, our people continue to readily buy drapery and the general wares of a drapery shop even at the enhanced values, but on the purchasing the retailers notice that quantities are usually cut down to immediate requirements. During the first three mouths of the present year, the Australian Customs officials seized no less than 811 b lloz of opium, which was in the course of being smuggled into the country. All but a few pounds was seized in New South Wales. The authorities made nine captures in New South Wales, which yielded 771 b 4oz of opium and nearly 81b of ash, the total value being £IOB3. The offenders were heavily fined, and in one ease imprisonment .for six months was imposed. Only Boz of opium was seized in Victoria during the period under review, and this was tin' result of nine different captures. In each case the offender was fined £lO. In Queensland three seizures of opium were made, and about 31b of the prohibited drug was secured by the authorities. For the corresponding periodof last year tlie authorities seized 481 b of opium, so that the opium traffic with Australia is either on the increase or the Customs authorities are getting more closely into touch with the smugglers..
Australia, and gold are in many minds largely synonymous terms (says the London issue of the “War Cry”). But it is not possible, as some on this side of the world have imagined, (a happen upon nuggets of the precious metal in the streets. All the same, immense wealth lias been and is being taken from its mines. Wood and agricultural products are other sources of. almost untold gain-. It is interesting to note that the Savings Bank deposits show a higher rate per head of the' population than in any other country with the exception of the Commonwealth’s favoured sister Dominion, Now Zealand. 1 But 'notwithstanding all its prosperity, and tlie happy conditions in which its people, spend their lives, there is to be found, sadly enough the universal enemy of mankind. The Devil is not exorcised by temporal wellbeing. High wages, happy housing and ideal working conditions .cannot deal with the evils of the human heart.
