CLEARING WHISKY FROM BOND DUNEDIN, June 24.
For some time past merchants and liotel-keoper.s of Dunedin have been clearing whisky from bond at a rapid rate. This move is iu anticipation of an immediate increase iij duty. The expectation of tho increase is based on the knowledge that tho Minister of Finance wants money, and on the fact that tlio duty in Australia is 25s per gallon, and in New Zealand only 18s. It is said that tho holders are so anxious to get the whisky out of bond that some are storing it in rooms and sheds, when they have no further cellarage space.
COAL .MINERS’ CONFERENCE. WELLINGTON, June 20.
A conference between the coal miners and owners terminated abruptly,-'the former rejecting the owners’ offer to abide absolutely by the decisions of the tribunal to he appointed by Moil. W. M. Hughes. Meanwhile they are increasing the wages of all lower paid men to 14s (id. Miners sought L'l per day for all the lower paid men. Stop work meetings will he held on Wednesday, at which tile Miners’ Executive will recommend the non-acceptance of the owners’ proposals.
MAN KILLED RY MOTOR. AUCKLAND, June 27
James -McDonald, a cabinet maker, and a married mail, was knocked down by a motor when alighting from a tram at Kingsland last night. He ivas taken home apparently not seriously injured, but died this morning. An inquest is being held this afternoon. SCHOONER’S ROUGH VOYAGE. AUCKLAND, June 27. The schooner, Helen B. Sterling, met a gale on her voyage from Newcastle. The vessel lost, several sails and a quantity of deck cargo, comprising Japanese oak, which was washed overboard.
