HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FRIDAY, JUNE 25th
The Council met at 7.55 p.m. Present—Messrs G.. A. Perry (Mayor), H. M. Coulson, G. A. Wood, J. J. Breeze, N. Warren, H. A. Thompson, F. McGregor, A. Parkhill, J. King, and G. H. Blank.
The Minutes iveaie confirmed and outward correspondence approved. INWART) CORRESPONDENCE .
From Prime Minister acknowledging resolution in favour of children’s footwear being admitted free and stating that children’s footwear 0 to 4 wore at present admitted free except for primage duty.—Received. From Same acknowledging resolution in favor of a univeral Saturday half holiday and stating the letter had been forwarded to the Miniter osf Labour.— Received.
From N. Z. Railways, Greyrnouth undoing agresement to supply water by Bojrotigh for futher five years.—Received ; in reply to Mr Breeze who asked what water vas in the reservoir, the Mayor stated there was five feet at present. After discussion the signing of the deed was deferred to next mect-
From W. J. Marks applying for lease of reorves adjoining his residence, Hampden Street.—Received; offer accepted at £1 per year.
From Ilnwera Boroujdi Council thanking Council for action taken in connection with resolution re footwear. —Received.
From W. C. Braddon (Superintendont of Firo Brigade) reporting that lie was not in favor of Wild and Bassets application for a license for the storage of benzine, not considering the proposed building suitable, and referring Council to Inspector Hugo’s re.port on a former application.—Received.
From Waimariri County Council urging 'that Government bo urged to give power to Hospital Boards to borrow money for permanent buildings, and that such sums lie subsidised.—Received. A discussion ensued as to the advisability of giving power to Boards to pledge the ratepayers.
Mr Breeze moved that the Council give support to the movement. Seeonded bv Mr McGregor. An amendment by Mr King that consideration he hold ovjer was seconded by Mr Warren and carried, Messrs Blank, McGregor and Breeze dissenting. Becoming the substantial motion it was agreed to. In reply to Mr Blank (Chairman of Public Works) who stated the Overseer had requested an instruction as to the definite charge for erecting street crossings, it was resolved after discussion that tlie charge be for crossings to private residences fifty per cent, and to business places 75 per cent of the cost of same.
REPORTS. From Treasurer reporting receipts £6oi 18s sd, payments £472 Is 2d; credit balance £22 2s sd. Received. In reply to Mr Warren the Town Clerk stated that the interest paid by the Council for the last five years was £3O: or about £5 per year. TENDERS FOR OFFAL.
It was resolved, prior to the opening of tenders, that the successful tenderer must provide suitable bondsmen for the due carrying out of the contract. Tenders were then opened for the purchase of offal at the abattoirs for a period of five years, from T. M. Staines £67, ,T. T Timpson £7O/5/- per annum.
Mr Warren moved that the highest tender be accepted. Seconded by Mr Thompson. Mr King said Mr Staines had given ’every satisfaction in the past and be. moved an amendment that the tender of Mr Staines be accepted. Seconded by Mr .Blank. Mr -reeze protested at .the amendment. The Mayor stated that after calling tenders they were in duty bound to accept the highest tender, if any. The amendment- was then withdrawn and the motion for the acceptance of Mr Timp son’s tender agreed to.
Mr Coulson asked if anything had been done in connection with the report asked for in connection with the water supply. The Mayor replied in the negative stating that this was due to the” health of the Overseer. The Finance Committee recommend ed that an estimate he obtained of the costs of repairs and painting of the Town Hall—Received and approved. It was also resolved on the motion of Messrs Blank and King that the Hall Street drain he continued as funds permitted. Mr Coulosn pointed out that there were at present six men at work at day labor at 13/- per day engaged in chipping footpaths. They had bejen employsinee before the Prince’s visit. Ibis would pay interest on a £14,000 loan. He moved an amendment that the proposed work he held over till the report of the water supply till the report of the water supply was available. Mr McGregor raised the point that Mr Coulson was out of order. The Mayor ruled against Mr Coulson and the meeting termined at 9 p.m.
