There is a new name for the famous Cmuirdcr Mauretania, which docked here from New York this morning. She is now called the .£50,000,000 ship,, because of the large number of wealthy Americans she ha B brought to England this voyage. They are the vanguard of the American invasion, and include bankers, merchants, stockbrokers, engineers, and professional men who, wealthy in 1914, are now, as oijo person puts it, “rolling in money.”
“It is certainly the most wealthy passenger list we have ever carried,” said one of the ship’s officers, “and in the old days we were called the millionaires’ yacht.” The voyage completes tlie fastest round trip from England to New York and hack since the war. It has been accomplished in just over 1(5 days.
MISS DORIS KEANE. LONDON, May 3. .Miss Doris Keane, the actress, returned to this country on Saturday after six months’ absence in the United States, where she went to take part in a film reproduction of “ Romance.”
Her fee is said to have broken the record, amounting, it is believed, to about £4O,(XX) at the present rate of exchange, plus a share of the profits. It was the first time she had played before tlie camera.
“ The technique is entirely different,” she said. “Everthing is so magnified on the screen that it is more imperative than ever for an actress to ‘live’ her part. She must be the character she plays, must feel that she is the living being and not just the representative. But the Duse and the Henry living of the films have yet to he found.” Miss Keane says she does not intend to appear in London until the autumn.
WIRELESS TORPEDOES. PARIS, May 3. An invention by a French wireless engineer, M. Dunoyer, will completely change the whole character of naval warfare, it its claims are fulfilled. It consists of what he calls ah “electric safety leclc.”' Tlie mechanism to direct the course of a torpedo and secure its explosion against an enemy warship can be worked not only by wireless waves of the right length but also by a proper sequence of Morse signals. Any error in the light sequence of dots and dashes would run the meolianism down to' -aero again and render the torpedo harmless. Each torpedo launched would have its own key sequenoe of dots and dashes, and so tlie enemy would he unable to tamper with it.
INFECTED GOAT STOLEN. BERLIN, May 3.
A goat infected for experimental pur poses with typhus at the municipal hos - pital at Reinickendorf, a Berlin suburb, lias disappeared. It is believed to.have* been stolen by a poor couple anxious to provide their little children with fresh milk.
NEGRO WITH A RAZOR. LONDON, May 3. Hundreds of people watched an exciting struggle at the corner of Struttongrouncl and Victoria Street, S.W., last night between a coloured man, who had run wildly through the streets brandishing a razor, and six policemen, who, after a short but desperate struggle, secured him and took him fco Rochester Row Police Station.
Mr Joseph Storey and Mr W. Edwards, who tried to stop the "man, had slight razor-cuts. The Negro, who is said to he an Abyssinian, and is known locally as “Darkey Smith,” is well known in tlie neighbourhood for his enormous physical strength. He was roused to anger, it is stated, by a slighting reference to his colour made by some men outside a public house. According to one witness, “he roared line a wild animal and, drawing a razor from an inside pocket, he rushed madly along the street.”

KILLED BY A STOLE. BERLIN, May 1. A woman’s fur stole fell accidently into the arena at the Berlin Olympia yesterday and caused a tragic interruption to the first motor cycle race since the war. The fourth race was for a prize offered by the United Automobile Hubs of Ger-
many. Retienne, tlic winner of all the previous races that afternoon, had developed a tremendous speed by the fourth round. The stole became entangled in his machine, and he crashed on a sleep curve. lfirkhahn, of Dussoldorf, close behind him, lost control of his machine in panic and rushed headlong among the spectators. lie broke his neck. EXPLOSIVE MANURE. COLOGNE, May 1. ' A strange explosion has occurred at Stolberg, near Ai.x-la-Chape!lo. Two j wagon loads of artificial manure which . were being unloaded at the railway sta- | lion suddenly blew up, and the station '■ and all the surrounding buildings were i seriously damaged. 1 Seventeen persons were killed and a | great number injured. The whole 61 the surrounding district lias been evacuated owing to the danger of the buildings collapsing. ! It is supposed that the manure was made from old ammunition which, through careless treatment, was insufficiently neutralised.
CARPENTIER STATUE. PARIS, Ma y t
E'ght years have been spent by La’idowski, tlie sculptor, over his statue of “The Pugilist” which he is showing at the next exhibition of sculpture hero.
Carpentier was his model. The harmony of his lithe, strong body and the vigour in his face impressed, the sculptor who since has hardly missed one fight in which Carpentier took V* part. The boxer is depicted as if he n*id just stepped into the ring. His left leg is slightly forward, and his figure s lightly poised on both feet. The head and shoulders are slightly inclined forward in an attitude of expectancy, and both hands, enveloped in the classic cesttis, swing easily by bis side.

She says that the divorce was obtained in Paris several months ago. Airs Thomas has achieved some distinction as poet and playwright ard is prominent in the suffrage movement. Her former husband was at one time Under-Secretary at the American Embassy in Rome and later Secretary of Legation at Aladrid.
