Gratification will be felt by all Now Zealand ex-members of the Imperial Camel Corps nt the news that Earl Winterton, second in command of the 2nd Battalion,* has informed Major M. C. Hemphill that the British Commissioner of Works has sanctioned the erection of a statue in Victoria Gardens, AVestminster, as a memorial to those brigade members who lost their lives in Palestine. The statue will take the form of a mounted camelman, with plaques round the sides representative of the different units, including the Anzacs.

PRISONER ESCAPES. HAMILTON, June 25. Thomas Oswald Kmidsen, who was sentenced yesterday to two years for theft, escaped from custody in the early hours of tlie morning, by cutting his way through the inner and outer walls of his cell, together are about two inches thick. Knndsen wa's awaiting transfer to Auckland to-day and was placed in a cell where he was visit, ed at intervals. He was quite safe at three this morning, but was missing at five o’clock. So far there is no trace of Knndsen, who is a Swedish sailor.

TARANAKI JOCKEY CLUB. NEW PLYMOUTH, June 22. The Taranaki Jockey Club to-night unanimously adopted a comprehensive and ambitious scheme of improvements to tiie racecourse, estimated to cost £70,000. . The scheme provides for the purchase of an aditional area of nearly 24 acres adjacent to the present course, making a total of 55 acres, and for tlie adoption of a plan of improvements submitted by Mr A. C. Hill, of Ellerslic. When the scheme is completed, the Club will have one of the most up-to-date racing tracks in the Dominion. It is likely that will be at least seven years before tlie improvements are completed.
