PILLAGISG ON WHARVES
HOW TO DEFEAT IT. AUCKLAND, June 22. Pillaging on the wharves and how to defeat it were dealt with in a report to the Harbour Board this afternoon by the traffic manager. “In reference to the recent cases of pillaging ?n the
sheds,” ran the report, “I beg to re- . port that in jny opinion the (ply way to prevent this is bv increased and metrir efficient supervision. The Board’s stqre ' keepers should he fine of the principal factors in this direction, though their dime is at present largely occupied wjtb other duties. The shipping companies could assist greatly if it were possible ftir them to have reliable salaried men for supervision and delivery, while it would also ht* ail advantage if the sorters were permanent hands. I understand the Customs have the right to search anyone they suspect of being in possession of dutiable goods. It would have a very great moral effect, and would be wonderful deterrent, it' this search could be put into force ip eases of suspected poisons when leaving the wharves- lam of opinion that this is particularly necessary in eases of carters’ feeding-bags and the numerous handbags.”
