A genial and highly respected old resident of the. West Coast in the person

Two applications for coal-mine leases are to be made before Mr H. D. M. Hazard, Commissioner of Crown Lands
for Canterbury, early in August. One application made by .1. C. Pascoe, Reefton, relates to 190 acres in Block V., and the other, made by Arthur Tlios.

A girl sang a song in which she asked. in the first line of the chorus, “I wonder if he will miss mo ” and she sang it with more force than expression of sweetness. Mr Seddon, M.P., proceeded north this evening, asd will meet private deputations at Greymouth to-night. He crosses to the East Coast to-morrow, and will he in Wellington for Tuesday, when the real business of the Parliamentary session begins. According to report, the session is expected to run well up to Christmas. The Government will outline a very long programme for the consideration of Parliament.

At Addington stock market on Wednesday there was a very smali supply of fat pigs came forward, and the demand was in consequence much brisker. Values were as follows: —Choppers, £8 to £10; light baconers, £6 5s to £8 10s; average price per lb., IOJd to lid; light porkers, £4 to £4 15s; heavy porkers, £5 to £5 15s; average price per lb Is Id to Is 2d. A smaller entry of store pigs was offered, and met a very satisfactory demand. Large stores were scarce. Values were as follows. Medium stores, 50s to 605.; small stores, 41s to 48s fid; weaners 20s to 28s.
In a reference to the new school at Foxton, the Feilding “Star” says:— “The school is pronounced by good judges to be the finest specimen of school architecture in the Dominion. The rooms are well placed for the sun, splendidly lighted, perfectly ventilated, heated under the hot water radiator system, and equipped with the latest single desks and table for the infant department. The corridors are spacious, ind several resemble small halls, although such a word must not he used in t!>' hearing of the education officials in Wellington. Dougall, a Christchurch ( it: wn who has taken much interest in war works, returned from a visit to Victoria recently, and said he was much struck there by one of the forms of war memorial—the planting of great avenues of trees. In Ballarat the Prince of Wales was to unveil a memorial arch. Stretching from this in a continuous line of fifteen miles is an avenue of trees each tree planted in honour of a soldier who served, and bears a porcelain plate with the man’s name, number, and ”e----giment. Memorial avenues had also been planted in Hobart, hut the lines are not continuous.
The Department of Agriculture ha** just issued a booklet containing a complete description of the most popular breeds of utility poultry as approved by the department, the New Zealand Poultry Association, the North Island Poultry Association, and the New Zealand Poultry Champion Association. Tn a foreword it is stated that the standards compiled by the recent conference and the diagrams in the booklet arc intended to furnish everv breeder of poultry for utility purposes with a detailed description of the characteristics of the breeds he is working with, Wihich make for the greatest productiveness, and also to furnish a -ecognised standard by which utility oojlti'.v classes in shows can be judged throughout New Zealand.

A remarkable accident occurred in the New Plymouth railway yards yesterday afternoon (says a Press Association). The guaid’s van ol a train 'was derailed ,and after capsizing, was dragged a distance of two chainß. The guard was in the front of the train at the time. No one was injured.
