In a charge at Christchurch against a man who was the victim of drugs and drink, the evidence showed that lie had been in an inebriates’ borne six months. M.r Day, S.M., remarked that it was useless to send such a man to a home for less than two years. He added: ”It is becoming useless, in my opinion, to send people to Rotorua as they are let out far too soon. If the relatives bother the authorities the line of least resistance is to let the patient out. Medical testimony shows that two years is the minimum time required to rid the system of drink.”

The following telegram wa s received by the chairman of the Grey County Council (Mr J. Irvine) from-tlie Hon. Mr J. Coates, Minister of Public Works, re the proposed Ten Mile Creek bridge:- “In reply to your telegram of the 14th ifist., 1 have to state that I have further considered the matter and regret that I cannot seen my way to al_
ter the decision conveyed to you in my letter of the 10th ult. There is no : guarantee that the materia] for a bridge ‘ could be secured, and this alone would delay its erection indefinitely, and I
have been able to let a co-operative contract for the formation of part of the road to the low level bridge. Communication can be obtained much more quickly by adopting the road proposed, instead of a high-level bridge, as the low-level bridge can be used I understand. This is important.”
