LATE LOCALS.

The usual weekly euchre and dance in St. Mary’s Club rooms last evening met with a large attendance. Mr T. Rouse secured the gent’s Ist prize, (a joint of meat), and Mr A. Jacobs the second, (a pipe). The ladies’ first, (box sweets), went to Mrs H. Harker, and the-2nd. (-sweets), to Mrs A. Sumner. The ladies'committee supplied refreshments and dancing was indulged in until mid-night. Miss O .Breeze supplied the music with extras by Misses A. Stopforth and M. Devaney. The Melbourne “Age” of May 27th reports:—Whilst working bis teat at North Melbourne about 3 a.m. yesterday Constable Kennedy noticed two men who aroused bis suspicions. He found one of them in possession of a ham and a quantity of butter, and, the.constable suspecting it to be stolen property, ordered the men to accompany him to th<v police station. One of them refused, and dashed away. The constable drew bis revolver and fired, but the shot failed to take effect, and the man escaped in the fug. Single-handed Constable Kennedy took the other man and the property to the watch house, where he gave the name of William David Hamilton Carter, 20, labourer. Investigation disclosed that the stores of Alexander M'Diarmid and Peter Kirwan (formerly a well known fruiterer of ltevell street, Hokitika, and now in business in Victoria Markets) had been burgled, and blitter and bacon to the total value of £63 stolen. Later in the day Plain Clothes Constables Caplin and Loorliam recovered the whole of the missing property, and arrested George Pearson, 26, butcher’s labourer, and Frederick Jackson Howes, 20j butcher. The three men were charged with shop-breaking and stealing, and will appear at the North Melbourne Court.
